The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
